PLASCRUG COUNTY PRIMARY SCHOOL

Plascrug is a busy and friendly, multicultural primary school in Aberystwyth, a coastal town in West Wales. The surrounding area is rural. There are approximately 400 pupils in our school, aged from 3yrs in the part time nursery, to 10 years in Year 6. There are two classes for each year group and 50 members of staff, including 18 teachers. Welsh is used as a medium of teaching in a number of lessons. We also learn and teach Welsh as a second language.

The school community is a cosmopolitan one; approximately a quarter of our pupils are from countries overseas. In all, there are 38 countries represented and 27 differing languages spoken at the school.   We place an important emphasis on learning about other countries and cultures within the school. Pupils in Year 3 and 5 have participated in a British Council funded ‚Learning Spanish through Music‘ program this year with the BBC Welsh National Orchestra and we would like to extend the modern foreign language learning to other year groups.

Plascrug is an Eco School (platinum level), and a Healthy Eating School (level 6). We have achieved the International School Award Re-accreditation and are a Global Learning Programme – Wales Lead School. We are also a lead creative school and believe that creativity should be at the heart of what we do at Plascrug. Plascrug is a green school according to the National Government for Wales School categorisation scheme. This is the highest level and reflects the quality of our leadership and standards.

Pupils in our school have the opportunity to participate in lots of clubs, including chess club, Art Club, Culture Club, hockey, football and gymnastics. We have a team of Digital Wizards to help with ICT; the Bronze Ambassadors help us to keep active; the Eco Council looks after the school grounds and recycling, and the School Council helps the adults to run the school!

We are looking forward to celebrating our 50th anniversary in 2019.
